Rupert Real Estate
|
Rupert, Idaho is another Southern Idaho city where the real estate is a great
value. The home prices are similar to what you will find in Burley with a single-family
house having an estimated median value of $95,659 in 2005.
With the average cost
of houses approaching a quarter million dollars nationwide, it's no wonder Rupert
is so attractive to out of state buyers.

A Short History of Rupert, Idaho
|
Minidoka Village was established in 1884 becoming the first permanent settlement
in the area. The Reclamation Act of June 17, 1902 was responsible for creating the
Minidoka Project which caused a large influx of settlers beginning in 1904.
Rupert,
which became a village around 1904 and was incorporated in 1906, was originally
called "Wellfirst" because it had the first well sunk within miles. People came from
all over to get their water supply from this well. This well was in the middle of
the famous Rupert City Square where the fountain is now.
Although it's not certain how Rupert came to be the name of the city, it is probable
that it was named after John Henry Rupert. Apparently Mr. Rupert was a railroad
employee responsible for bringing the mail to the early settlers.
Minidoka Dam, which has the oldest hydro-electric power plant operated by the Bureau
of Reclamation, provided the area with electricity and irrigation. Electricity was
available in Rupert by 1911 and became one of the first cities in the world to have
electric powered street lights!
Although the interior has been remodeled several times over the years, the current
Minidoka County Courthouse looks pretty much the same as it did in 1917 when it
was built.
In November of 1987, Rupert was officially named "Christmas City, USA".

Rupert Economic Information
|
The 2000 census puts the population of Rupert at 5,645 which is less than half of
the rural population that considers Rupert their home. The estimated median household
income in 2005 was about $34,221, up from $31,025 in 1999.
The low cost of living
and price of property makes the seemingly low wages go very far here. Everything here
is well below the national average, except for the quality of life available to
anyone who wants to become part of this wonderful community.
Farming is the main industry in Rupert and the surrounding area. Agriculture and
dairy related companies such as Brewster Dairy (which purchased the Kraft Cheese
plant), several potato plants, including Idahoan Foods and the Amalgamated Sugar
Factory just west of Rupert have a major economic impact on Rupert.
The Mini-Cassia Chamber of Commerce has an Economic Development Commission dedicated
to helping new businesses get started and exisiting businesses to thrive in Rupert
as well as all of Minidoka and Cassia county.
