About Idaho's Mini-Cassia Area
|
The word "Mini-Cassia" comes from combining Minidoka and Cassia, two counties in
South Central Idaho that really form one community. The economies of these two counties
are so intertwined that it's easy to forget where Mindoka County and Cassia county
meet. In fact, the city of Burley is in both counties separated by the Snake River.
Declo, Oakley, Albion, Malta, Elba and Almo are also in Cassia County. Rupert, Heyburn,
Paul, Minidoka and Acequia are located in Minidoka County.
Cassia County was created in February 20, 1879 and the original county seat was
in Albion, Idaho. It was later moved to Burley on November 5, 1918. Minidoka County
was established in January 28, 1913 with the county seat in Rupert. The type of
land in the Mini-Cassia area is incredibly diverse with alpine lakes, lush farmland,
desert areas, forests, thriving valleys and of course the Snake River plain.
The Snake River, which is the boundary that divides Minidoka and Cassia County,
is one of the features that also ties the two counties together. In this part of
Southern Idaho, farms and dairies are the primary driving force behind the local
economy. The Snake River is an important part of both industries and is the life
blood of our area.

Things to do in the Mini-Cassia Area
|
Public lands are abundant in the Mini-Cassia area and provide residents and visitors
with many outdoor opportunities, including hunting, fishing and camping. Trail activities
such as hiking, backpacking, camping, horseback riding, bicycling and four-wheeling
are minutes away, no matter where you are located in the area.
The Snake River is a great place for fishing, water skiing and boating. In fact,
it is the home of the famous annual Burley Regatta in June. There are also many
lakes and streams available for the avid fisherman.
If you're wanting to see a little history, the Oregon Trail, California Trail and
several other pioneer trails cut across the Mini-Cassia area leaving many historical
landmarks along the way. Register Rock which is located in the City of Rocks, still
bears the names and initials (written in axle grease) of many emigrants passing
through in the mid-1800's. Some of the rocks even have ruts from the wagon wheels.
